While my degree is in Electrical Engineering, Case Institute of Technology (my college, later a part of Case Western Reserve University) we had to select a humanity core besides our engineer core. I selected "Psychology Core". I felt it would help me understand relationship between others I work and live with.
One of the big things I remembers from those courses was Maslow's "Hierarchy of Needs". I think that understanding this "hierarchy of needs" explains what is needed before the country can reduce crime, suicide, depression, and untold ailments.
Simply the hierarchy illustrates the people will NOT raise up the pyramid until the lower needs were satisfied. Likewise, when the person's economical situation drops into a lower level, the person devolves as the needs change.
Unfortunate.y, the USA economy is pushing most of the citizenry down to the lower levels if the pyramid. Crime, homeless, suicide, and it's ails are rampant. Current programs treat the symptoms, not the causes.
Most of the economy is floundering. How can people better themselves when they have to work 2 or 3 low paying jobs to meet basic needs. The economy is holding people down.
remember the adage - "rising tide lifts all boats".
Only the well-to-do can ever achieve their full potential.
