After breakfast, it was time for my first ever horseback ride. The wrangler and her helpers got me settled into the saddle on "Doc". Here's the money shot of Doc and me.
After about 1/2 hour, I was ready to call it enough for a first ride. Went to the room to post the photo. In the afternoon, I again rode Doc - this time for a hour-long riding lesson.
After the lesson, I was feeling a little more comfortable riding. Learned more of the way to guide the horse, getting him to go where I wanted him to go.
After a shower and changing into my evening wear, I settled into a stool on the bar in the saloon. Was a little hungry. Had some bar-food washed down with pints of Kilt Lifter. Later, we moved into the card room to learn how to play Texas Hold-um.
Tired. I headed to my room about 10pm. Had an order of deep-fried cheese curds and some fries as food. Foir pints of beet, and a couple hours of practice poker.. Unfortunately, I was so wired, I had problems getting to sleep. It was an awesome day.

Busy Sunday
Late departure from the motel. Destination for the day was Fort Bayard and downtown Silver City. The Fort did nit open until 10am on Sunday. Visited with the volunteers at the one open building. From there, did a driving tour of the fort.
Next spot was downtown. Parked and took several photos of the historic building in tow, There even is the Murray Hotel with an art deco facade.
It was only about noon, and I was not ready to go to the motel to pack. Decided to do the 65 miles to Glenwood and the Catwalk National Trail.
Grabbed my walking stick (sure happy I brought it) and headed out up the trail. The trail stats as a paved trail. At one place, there is option to continue the paved, easier trail or a dirt, steeper trail. I opted to say on the paved trail.
It was a bit of a hike up the trails before the catwalk starts. Several times I thought of stopping and just heading back. But, with a rest (unfortunately no benched along the trail) I persevered. Eventually I got to the catwalk. Continues the catwalk trail until in ends with a ground level trail. /
There were 2 benches on the catwalk, took time to rest, get a photo of me, before heading back down to the car. Was relieved when I made it back at the car, Guzzled a bottle of Gaterade and headed back to the motel.
Packed up the room and went back to the Wrangler for dinner. Had their French Dip with side of potato salad washed down with 2 pints of Amber Bock. Back at the motel, I crashed into bed.

Bosque and Brat
Had problems sleeping last night. Went to the breakfast room and had some cereal, coffee, and apple juice. Bach to bed and nap. About noon, it was time for me to grab my cycling kit and prepare for a bike ride.
This would be my first ride if the year and it was 5000 foot altitude. Was not sure how far I could/should ride. I knew the best place to ride was the Bosque from the Montano trailhead.
Ended up with just over 4.5 miles. Did not want to over-do this first ride. Treated myself to a pint of amber ale, a brat, and fries at Spinn's (about 2 blocks from the trailhead). My the time I was back at the room, unloaded the bike, and shed the cycling kit, I was exhausted.
Back to preparations for moving tomorrow - visit insurance agent to give him information about the difference property. Selled of Wyoming Autumn property has until 5pm Monday to respond to my offer.

My Move to Albuquerque
Some of you know that I have been planning a move Southwest to Albuquerque, New Mexico. For others, it may come as a surprise. I have lived in Pottawattamie County, Iowa for nearly 30 years. When I moved here, I thought I would live in this house until I died or had to move into a care facility. Things and priorities have changed.
In 2005, I suffered a stroke caused by a failed heart valve. To keep this part of the story short, suffice it to say that the cardiac rehab folks wanted to know what I was going to do to keep active. I settled on riding a bicycle.
Since a kid, I was the family photographer. I started carrying a camera in the pocket of my cycling jersey. Soon, riding my bicycles and taking photos of bike trails became my passion. There was a problem. Living 2 miles down a gravel road takes me to busy, high-traffic roads with no shoulder. I had to load the bike on the car rack and drive 13 miles plus to a bike trail.
For several years, I drove to the trailhead, unload the bike, and pedal on down the trails. One year I logged over 3300 miles on my bikes.
During my trips, I generally had at least one bicycle with me. I started planning trips with destinations where I can stop for a couple days and ride my bikes. It has been a great way to explore the area. A bike ride on unfamiliar trails adds some adventure. It gave me the opportunity to shoot some awesome photos for my “Bicycle Trails” calendar.
In Moab, Utah, I was planning a bike ride. Traffic was terrible in the little town. I decided to start my ride from my room. It was an enjoyable experience. I have had similar experiences in Kalispell, MT and Decorah, IA.
Being in my 60s with my health issues, it was becoming dangerous for me living by myself in the country. Besides the distance to medical facilities, I am serviced my a volunteer fire department and rescue squad.
It because clear, I needed to move into a town – A town/city with a good bicycling infrastructure. My Army Reunion trips have given my the chance to look at locations that have what I was looking for.
I could just move into a place in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area. But, I have had enough of the cold and humidity. I visited a cousin in Albuquerque, NM. The weather is more moderate and drier. They have an awesome bicycle trail system. Should I want, skiing is about an hour away. I found a motel a block off the trail system. The area has lots to see and do. Many opportunities for photography.
Over the last 6 years. I have been making 1 or 2 trips a year to Albuquerque. I found the climate is more temperate, I can tolerate the altitude, and housing prices are comparable to the Omaha area.
I started plotting my move to Albuquerque. A big concern I had was my health – not so much the heart valve, but the 4 cancers I have been battling. Three of them are now over 5 years since treatment. There is just one area we are still watching. My medical oncologists (and my other doctors) say there should be nothing keeping me from moving.
So, here I am, starting the process of moving from rural Iowa to a city lot in Albuquerque. The large house on 6 acres will be on the market. Initial scouting shows good prospects for homes near the bike trails with no/little yard maintenance. I am not looking forward to the hassle of moving, but happy I have decided to make the change. It will be great for my physical and mental health.

Kenosha Harbor Ride
Monday I had to get out of mom's apartment. Visited for a while at the rehab facility abd headed out for a bike ride. Nice day on the shore of Lake Michigan. Long sleeve jersey, full length tight bibs, and a light jacked.
Parked at the South end of the Southport Marina. Rode the Pike Bike Trail to the torpedo display. Back to the South end of the trail and rode most of the trail again, Ended up with just over 5 miles. Exhausted when done.
Stopped at the Boat House for a cheeseburger and pint of beer. Burger had 2 different types of cheese! Had a pint of local beer - "Fixed Gear". Not sure which brewery it is made by.

Kenosha Harbor Bike Ride
Was planning to ride my bike along the Harbor Sunday with a cousin. I was just too fried from the reunion festivities. Went out for breakfast with my mom. Rested in the hotel room. In the evening, I went over to the Brat Stop for a couple pints of beer and a brat.
While at the Brat Stop, I picked up a Packer/Brat Stop t-shirt. The clerk checking out my purchase asked if I was/is in the military. She gave me a 10% discount because of my Army service.
From my bike ride, went to Mom's apartment. We went to DeRango's Pizza for an early dinner. I ordered a bottle of Fat Tire and cheeseburger with fries. Mom ordered diet coke and french dip. Drinks came quickly but it too forever to get out food. Well over 1/2 hour waiting for our food. I do not recommend this establishment.

Root River Trail
Not in a big hurry this morning. Waffle and coffee at the motel. Weather was threatening light rain/drizzle. Forecast was a clearing, to headed out for Lanesboro, MN and the Root River Trail. the trail is on an old railroad right-of-way.
This town, about 50 miles SW of La Crosse, was a hub of bicycle activities, The trail is paved with asphalt, a welcome break from the crushed stone I had been riding in the area. As you can see in today's photo, even the bridge decking is paved.
Rode a little over 2 1/2 miles. Facing a hill I would need to descend (and climb back!) I turned back to town. Also, I knew i had a little climb as the trail comes into town, my legs were almost toast from the rides on the trip. I have been riding every-other day. Had a burger and fries at the little diner in Lanesboro.
Back to La Crosse, rested and soon time for dinner. It was my day for a bacon cheeseburger and craft beer. Headed downtown to The Old Crow. Had the local Pearl Street Brewery "Oktoberfest" beer. Was a nice compliment to the burger. Stuffed, did not any ice cream to top off the night.

La Crosse - Day 1
Had a great day in La Crosse. Was not sure how things would turn out since my legs were still complaining from the climb to the tunnel on the Elroy-Sparta Trail.
Started the day with a waffle. coffee, and apple juice at the motel. Looks like there was some light rain on the car and the sky was overcast. Anyway, this was my day for a bike ride so figured to make the best of it.
Plan was to ride the Great River State Trail. After some false starts to find a trailhead, I headed down the trail. Rode South from County Z. From the maps, its looked like this area would afford some nice views of the river (and Lake Onalsaka. But, this was not the case. On the sides of the trail was covered with trees and brush. Checked the trail North from Countu Z - trees with a section of prairie restoration. Lots of joggers out on this section of the trail. Several cyclists, by more joggers.
After a 5 mile ride on the Great River State Trail, I drove North to find the Lytles Landing trailhead. On the way back from that trailhead, I came across the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife & Fish Refuge. The refuge had paved bicycle trails and dirt walking/hiking trails. Rode my bike from the parking lot near the river through the prairie and over to the headquarters building.
Back at the room, I processed the morning photos, watched some TV and rested. Soon, it was time for dinner. Was planning to sample the cuisine at Stolpa's Stein Haus. Thanks to Steve for my first stein of beer. Ended up with 2 steins of Hofbrau Dunkel - a German beer. It was the closest they had for an Amber Ale.
Had a nice conversation with Steve. He had 2 uncles that served in Viet Nam, one of them being in the SeaBees. Very friendly place. A another customer couple thought I might be a food critic since I shot a photo of my food. Told them about my trips and trying to sample the local cuisine. Gave them and Steve's the link to my web site.
Ordered a "Stein Haus" Brat for dinner. Still hungry, I order another brat and stein of the same beer. Would have liked to have a local beer, but once in a while have to check out the European brews. It was then time to head to the motel. Made a look around the pub to get a photo of the place. Steve was just leaving the place.
Topped off the day with a Heath Blizzard. Was a great day in La Crosse. Have to see what I can schedule tomorrow.

Elroy-Sparta State Trail
After some coffee and breakfast, I was off to Wilton to ride the Elroy-Sparta State Trail. This was the first Rails-to-Trails in Wisconsin. Planned to ride West from Wilton up to Tunnel 2, a 2 mile ride. Was a humid, but not too warm morning (low/mid 70s). Stopped in at the Hardware Hank's that sells trail passes. Since i will be in the area for the long weekend and will be Wisconsin 2 more times later this year, I splurged with the $20 year pass.
I forgot how exhausting it grinding up the constant 2% grade on these trails. Had to be stopped to rest my legs and slow down my heart rate a couple times during the climb. My legs were almost toast when I arrived at the tunnel. Had my headlight - but not seeing anything in the 1/4 mile tunnel. Fog rolling out of the tunnel (see photo). Took a couple photos in the tunnel and headed down the hill. Really enjoyed coasting the 2 miles back down to town.
Back at the house, I processed photos from the ride. Then time for a shower (felt great).
Gerry and I headed into Coon Valley for lunch. The bat (Legacy Grill & Pub) had craft beers on top. Had 2 glasses of Capital Brewery's Wisconsin Amber with a cheeseburger and fries. We were served by Leah. Friendly establishment, good selection of craft beers.
More visiting with the family. Then it was time to finish photos and write yesterday's blog posting.

Day in Decorah
Knew it was going to be a hot and humid day. After my morning shower, I dressed in my cycling kit before breakfast. After motel breakfast of biscuit & gravy, I was ready for bike ride.
Did good selecting my lodging - just 2 blocks down the street to the Trout Run Trail. Started riding clockwise, riding as far as the fish hatchery, just short of milepost 5. Took me just past where the Decorah eagles are nesting. This section of the trail is pretty level and easy. Another mile and the hills start. Not ready for heavy climbing so turned back to my starting point.
When I got back, i still had legs left and feeling good. rode further almost to milepost 1. At this point, the trail is down between the levee and the river. Decided to turn around and get back to the motel. Good timing. I was getting tired and did not bring water/Gatorade with me. Stopped at the convenience store at the highway and started refreshing my electrolytes. The last 2 block gentle climb to the car was rough. Bike computer was not registering, so not sure just how fat I rode. Guessing it at 7-8 miles.
Stowed the bike in the room, started processing photos from the ride. Second shower of the morning and crashed on the bed.
Afternoon was for playing "tourist". Drove to the fish hatchery. Put the big lens on my camera, so it I could find the eagle nest, I am pretty sure I was successful (see lower photo).
From there, i was scouting the trail - wondering if i should try riding other sections tomorrow morning. On to the North side of town to check out the waterfall in Dunning's Spring Park. Beautiful place. Back to the room to process photos for afternoon nap before dinner.
At the convenience store just down from the motel, the suggested food at the Stone Hearth Inn (next door to my motel). I was thinking of eating downtown at T Bock's Sports Bar & Grill. Both had local beers on tap. Stone Hearth being next door to the motel won the day.
Had a pint of Toppling Goliath Tsunami American Pale Ale. It was the best of the local beers for the area. Chowed down with an Iowa breaded port tenderloin (the kind the is about 3 times the bun size). Topped off dinner with ice cream with chocolate syrup.

Forest City to Decorah
Internet was still out at my friend's place. Had some breakfast and loaded the car. Before 10 am i was o the road heading East. I noticed there was a paoved bicycle trail along the South side of rt. 9 East out of Forest City. In Manly, Iowa, I stopped to take a photo of an old locomotive and caboose on display.
Chuck has suggested stopping at a local park near Osage, IA. A natural spring in Spring Park near the Cedar River. Fount the park and took a couple of photos of the spring. Nice little park with vault toilets, shelters, tables, and discus golf. Camping is also available in the park. (see upper photo)
On towards Decorah. Rails-toTrails trail along the South side of Rt 9. It is the Prairie Farmer Trail, from Calmar to Cresco.
In Decorah, I found the Visitor's Center downtown. Picked up trail maps and area information. Went to my motel (little early and my room was not ready, yet). Drove back downtown to take some photos. interesting architecture in the town. Prominent on a hill is the Winneshiek County Courthouse.
Driving around town I found the local Trek bicycle dealer. Visited and got the skinny about the Trout Run Trail. Next door they had sandwiches and ICE CREAM! really enjoyed at large "Tornado" (their version of a DQ Blizzard). Back to the motel to settle into the room.
Two brewery "tap rooms" in town. Just like in Mason City, they are tap room - no food served. Was able to find the Toppling Goliath Tap Room on Collage Drive. Had a pain of Murph's - thier amber ale. Their web site says you can order food for delivery. Was going to do that but the gals behind the bar seemed to have no interesting waiting on me past the pint of beer.
Drove back to Water Street (main drag in town0 and found Mabe's Pizza. I was not looking for pizza, but they have sandwiches. Ordered my bacon-cheeseburger with fries. They had "Dorothy's" on tap - also from Toppling Goliath. Did not like this beer. Too light and fruity.
In the morning, I can pedal from my room. Its just 2 blocks from the motel to the Trout Run Trail! Be on the trail early in the morning before it get hot and muggy. Called it an evening. Got a sick during the night - something I ate and drank did not agree with me.

Sac & Fox Trail
After the family picnic and reunion, I had the 1 1/2 hour drive to my hotel. I wanted to check out a bike trail near Cedar Rapids - and needing the photos for my calendar. From the maps, it looked like the Sac & Fox trail, along the Indian Creek, should be interesting and photogenic.
A great trail. I would have enjoyed riding longer but the heat, humidity, and mosquitoes turned up quickly. Addition to the crushed limestone bike trail, there is a dirt/tree bark walking trail system in the same area.

Bike Ride, Brew, and Burger
Took it easy Yesterday morning. Had conversation with real estate agent friend to meet. Want to update plans for possible moving.
Beautiful for a bike ride. Loaded the hybrid. Google search showed a place for after ride brew and burger just a block from the trailhead where I was planning to ride from. Drove over to the Montano trailhead with access to the Paseo del Bosque.
Got in a 8 mile ride from the trailhead North to Paseo del Norte and back. At the end of the ride I felt surprisingly good. But ready for refueling!
Checked out Spinn's Burger and Beer at Coors and Montano. Started with a large glass of water (got to hydrate) and a pint of Marble Brewing Amber Ale. Food was the Original Spinn burger with chese and pepperbacon and fries. After-ride re-fueling at Spinn's could become a tradition.
Rest of the evening, crashed and relaxed. Processed a couple photos I took during my bicycle ride.

Angel Peak Scenic Area
Its amazing what lower altitude can do for getting a good night's sleep. Only woke up a couple times in the night. One of those times was because of a howling wind. Looks like thoughts of a bike ride may go by the wayside.
Showered and dressed for breakfast and perhaps the day. Back in the room, the body said "go back to bed". Slept in to about 9am. Did some work on the web site and made plans to tour the Angel Peak Scenic Area a little South from Bloomfield, NM.
Saw and photographed some awesome scenery. When you get to the area, you are on the edge of a mini Badlands. Drove the gravel road to its and, stopping at several turn-out to take photos. Stopped to visit with a couple from the El Paso there camping and playing "tourist".
Back in Farmington, I wanted to find the bicycle trail. Thought I had found it, and not interested in riding it. Processed photos from the day. Napped and watched. By 4 pm, I was getting hungry. Found my way to downtown and the 3 Rivers Brewery,
Tap room was too noisy, walked a few doors down to the restaurant. The way things have been going on this trip, they were out of the Arroyo Amber Beer that I wanted. The server suggested the Hop Scotch Ale. Ordered the beer and the chicken-fried steak (on the lighter appetites menu) . Nice change from the burger and fries. The gravy was not the normal white, tasteless gravy.
On the way back to the hotel, I finally found the riverwalk. Looks like it would be a nice trail to ride and photograph. In the room for the night - repack the bags for Albuquerque.

Aztec Ruins
Loaded the car and had some food in the breakfast room. Selected eggs and sausage (all lukewarm). Gassed up the car and headed on the road. The day was clear, decided to detour up to the Black Canyon - see if I could get some photos in better lighting.
Stopped at a couple vistas, one where I to walk a little to get to. By then, I was a stop at the visitor's center and do some shopping.
Back on the way toward Farmington,I drove US 550 to Aztec NM. I had forgotten the narrow, winding route that US 550 carves up and down the San Juan Mountains from Ouray to Durango, CO. Encountered some snow in the air - thankfully, nothing sticking to the road.
Made a wrong turn in Aztec, but with the help with a convenience store clerk, I fount Azrec Ruins National Monument. Parked the car and walked up to the entrance. Realized my camera SD card was about full. Back to the car to get a cleared card. The ranger gave me basic info about touring the ruins.
My body was about toast when I got back to the car. As I got into Farmington, it took 2 different stops to find my hotel. First stop was at the Cottonwood Cycles. Got the skinny on singletrack and bike path information in the area.
Checking in the room, I found me in a cracker-box room. Not even a chair and desk/table to use my laptop. Had to moved rooms - to a handicapped room. By now, I was very tired and frustrated. Took some time to move photo files onto the laptop. Processed my files into HDR photographs. Online, found a local brew-put for dinner. Problem was that I was too tired to think about dinner. Crashed into bed.

Recovery and Photography
When I got up Wednesday morning, I was hungry, Stuck my head out of the door, it was obvious that it had rained over night. At the breakfast room decided on having a waffle and coffee. Back at the room, I crashed into bed again.
Worked some on the new pages for my web site. Ate my left over pizza for lunch (hit the spot).
In the afternoon, I was ready to get out the room a little. Wanted to shoot a couple photos around Gunnison.Went to Hartman Rock to see what the place (and their trails0 looked like. Particularly with my altitude problems, no way I was about to attempt riding singletrack (or even dirt roads).
Processed the photos and did some more work on the web site. Pack bags for an early departute Thursday. Altitude still giving me a problem, could not get in a good night's sleep. Toss and turned all night.

Crested Butte / Gunnison, CO
Woke up in the middle of the night last night in Manitou Springs. Peaking through the window, I noticed that the street lights and other unessential lights are off. Looks like they are reducing light pollution. The other thing I noticed was the parking lot was wet with a light rain.
Ended up getting a good, long night's sleep. Had a light breakfast. With the pints and sandwich last night, also I need was a pastry and coffee.
Relatively uneventful drive to Crested Butte. Saw the Visitor's Center in Crested Butte. With the sign proclaiming "Elevation 8885", there was no way I was able to ride a bike there. Had problems just walking in the historic district. At least I was able to take a couple photos before I turned back and down to Gunnison. The photo here is of Elk Street in CB. It is between seasons in Crested Butte. Many restaurants and stores would not open again until June.
In Gunnison, I found my hotel. The desk clerk at the Rodeway Inn was very helpful in orienting me the downtown. First on the agenda was finding a bike shop. The folks at Double Shot Cyclery was very helpful. Hartman Rocks Recreation Area is about the only place to mountain bike. Came out with a map of the recreation area and suggestions for riding.
Grabbed my bags for this section of the trip and moved them from the car to the room. Copied the day's photos from the camera to the hard drive. Next it was off to food. At the Crested Butte Visitor's Center, I was steered to Gunnisack in Gunnison. As it happened, Monday is Burger Night! And, if I I timed it right, could also hit happy hour. Ended up with a 1/2 # cheeseburger, fries, and a pint of Fat Tire for $9 plus tip!

No Longer Shooting Race Photos
This
has not been an easy decision. I
have had a good run of taking photos at the Psycowpath mountain bike
races. Thanks to feedback from some riders, I have improved my photo
composition. There were good and bad shots – too many times I had
the camera just set wrong. For
other times, needed
to refine my techniques. All-in-all, it has been an educational
experience and a better photographer.
Many
of you know I rediscovered the bicycle as rehab from a heart valve
replacement. The first 5 years, my riding got stronger. But for the
last couple years I have been plagued by 4 different cancers. That,
arthritis in the left knee, and getting older (turning 68 later this
year), I cannot get around to get the shots I used to get.
There
have been another crop of photographers that can get the shot better
than I can. Add in that most folks just want small photos for the
social media pages, its
not worth my time to send a day shooting photos, posting them up to
the web site, and hope there are a couple of sales. One rider told
me he just grabbed the photos he wanted from the web site (there were
big enough for facebook). He was nice enough to tell me about it and
gave me a donation for the photos.
The
first 2 years, I just posted my photos. The rest of the years, I
asked for $5 for a cleaned-up photo. When I was shooting 400-500
shots at a race, I was not going to process all of the for sales of
2-5 photos. When a customer ordered a photo file, I start from
the camera RAW photo, touched up exposure, shadows and highlights,
and sent them via e-mail.
I
did not take a portion of sales as a donation to THOR. What I did
was donate any photos that the THOR and Psycowpath folks wanted for
their web site, facebook pages, and publicity. I appreciate the support from my customers and race friends. Its time to move on to a new chapter in my adventure called "life".
There
may be more changes in the works. I am now at over 10 years from the
stroke, open heart, and first cancer. In the next year or two, my
cancers will pass the 5 year mark. I will be getting more
information about moving SW for better riding weather and less
humidity. Watch for updates.
Last
year race photos are still posted on the win_photo.photoreflect.com
web site. They, and the Tranquility races will remain on the site
for a month or two.
Enjoy
your racing.

Bicycle Festivals
Its time to check out the bicycle festivals for the 2015 season. Last June's storm put a cramp on my bike festival attendance. The only festival I made was Outside Bike & Brew in Santa Fe. Hoping to get to more this year.
This list is no way meant to be all-inclusive. I am concentrating on those in the "Heartland" and those I have or may attend. Dates of RAGRAI are only included for reference. It would be to sacrilegious to omit the biggest in Iowa (my home state).
